About
About the conference
Techtank Conference has been organized since 2015, and is an annual meeting place for manufacturing and engineering companies, research institutes and other organizations that want to keep up to date with current trends in innovative manufacturing for industrial use, with focus on forming and stamping.
2020 Theme: Flexible Production, with focus on forming and stamping
Increased demand for customized and individualized products puts a greater focus on production flexibility. This is also addressed in the EU by the objective Excellent, responsive and smart factories & supply chains. Flexible production can handle volume changes, different variants, new materials and new material combinations. During Techtank Conference 2020 we will explore the area of Flexible production, with focus on forming and stamping.

Digital value chain for industrial origami
STILRIDE explores a digital value chain starting in how to extract curves and surfaces from a single compound surface that can be unfolded into a fully developed surface (flat sheet). The method integrates the technical and styling surfaces, enabling a lower component usage and thus cost and weight. By designing with these true curve geometries as a foundation STILRIDE wants to enable a new value chain for tool-less manufacturing with metallic sheets.
In sheet metal processing, classical methods of quality assurance and standard process monitoring are not sufficient any longer due to increasing requirements on product quality, production efficiency and flexibility. Modern nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques combined with new approaches of intelligent data evaluation and machine learning offer powerful new techniques for automated process monitoring and control. In the last few years there have been remarkable progress in the development of such cognitive sensor systems, especially for material-related tasks in hot and cold forming of sheet steel. The presentation will give an overview of these new developments.
In modern manufacturing, digital twins pose the promise of uniting the virtual process (models and simulations) with the physical process (measurement and actuation systems). Combining simulation models with real-time data may potentially be used to create a new type of high-fidelity model, and bring process monitoring and real-time control to a new level. In complex manufacturing processes, such as forming, it is however often nearly impossible to directly map real-time measurement data on physics-based models. This presentation will give an overview of the challenge. Furthermore, an approach will be presented to simultaneously estimate process variations and improve the underlying process model, for a mass manufacturing forming process.
Examples of Smart Stamping Applications at Volvo Cars and BTH – Blekinge Institute of Technology
Volvo Cars has a long experience in FE-simulations of sheet metal forming and is one of the leading automotive companies in the field. The simulations include aspects such as advanced material models, friction modeling, failure, and elastic die deformations. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at BTH is conducting research on how digital and model-driven methods in technical product development can lead to innovations that fit into a sustainable society. Since a few years back, Volvo Cars and BTH are combining their strengths in order to develop smart stamping applications. This presentation will include results from two recent studies by Volvo Cars and BTH. The first one is a master thesis on how to measure the force in every cushion pin in a single action die. The second study is a part of Johan Pilthammar´s PhD-thesis were the effects from die deformations on the contact pressure on the sheet are studied when mounting the same die in try-out press or home line.
Presentation and Test: Hot forming of AM-processed lightweight components
The test illustrates hot forming of an AM-processed titanium geometry for Aero engine applications. The pilot case was developed and demonstrated within LIGHTest – Testbed for Future Production of Lightweight Products Using Smart Material Solutions, in collaboration between RISE, GKN Aerospace Sweden and SME.
